Mediation & Collaborative Law
Your need...
You may be in a situation where your relationship has broken down. It is a stressful time for everyone, particularly if children are involved. You may be very upset and angry. You want to deal with the situation in as civilised a way as possible, ideally without expensive and time-consuming court proceedings. You want to communicate with your ex-partner, about the things that matter, with dignity, in a mature, calm way.
How we can help...
Mediation and Collaborative law are two alternatives to court proceedings.
We are one of very few law firms in Leeds that provides mediation. Mediation can be useful in many areas such as financial issues, contact and residence of children, the role of grandparents, pre-nuptial agreements and living together agreements. Mediation is generally cheaper and quicker than going to court. It is neutral, objective and more flexible, enabling you to find your own solutions with the help of solicitor-mediator. Unlike court proceedings, you are in control of the process. You can come to our lawyer-mediators directly or you can be referred to us by a solicitor. Either way, our family lawyer-mediators will work with you and your former partner to resolve issues, focussing on practical solutions, saving you time and money and enabling you to move forward with your lives.
Collaborative law encourages couples to openly discuss options and reach solutions together, face-to-face, with the support of your solicitors, rather than the traditional approach of communicating by letters and emails between solicitors. Correspondence is deliberately kept to a minimum. Because of this, it can be a far quicker process than a more ‘traditional’ approach. It allows you take control of the process and we will work with you to reach the right outcome for your needs. Specialist collaborative lawyers use their expertise and experience to advise you, negotiate and problem solve, ensuring key decisions about your future are made by you, not by a stranger in a court room.
Collaborative meetings can take place at a time and place to suit you. We adopt a flexible approach to working with our clients be it in person at our offices, your home or any other suitable location. We are clear from the outset on our costs - often set at a fixed fee – and the timescales relevant to your circumstances.
